Colored contact lenses have become an iconic part of movie makeovers and Halloween fun. In the past some unscrupulous manufacturers have sold unsafe lenses, but colored contacts are not inherently harmful. Adding an interesting new eye color to your costume or accessory collection is an excellent way to stand out. It takes only a little time and research to find the perfect colored contacts.
Cosmetic colored contacts are not used for vision correction, but rather to add style and intrigue to the wearer’s look. Also known as plano contacts, they have been used by movie stars to change their eye color for a role and by fashionistas as a high-style accessory. Now colored contacts are entering into the mainstream. Eye-doctors and online vendors alike are marketing colored contact lenses to broader audiences. Trustworthy manufactures require a prescription for colored contacts, even if they are not intended for corrective use. This is because contacts must be fitted to the wearer’s eye by an optometrist or ophthalmologist in order to be completely safe and comfortable.

online and at certain novelty stores. The risk of doing so will depend on the manufacturer. It has been found that certain kinds of cosmetic contacts can damage the eye. The FDA passed a law in 2005 defining plano contact lenses as a medical device. It is legally required for someone hoping to purchase these lenses to contact a medical professional and obtain a prescription.
These precautions are warranted. Prior to the law requiring a prescription most plano contacts were purchased online, at gas stations and at costume stores. Many of the people who purchased these lenses were not educated in proper eye wear care. As a result there was a spike in contact related eye-injuries. Wearing uncertified plano lenses can result in severe eye damage and even blindness. When buying any device meant to be used in the eye, caution is the best policy. A little research and common sense will lead to a fun and safe experience with colored contact lenses.
